If you are looking for a career where your services will be in high demand, you should find something where you provide a scarce, complementary service to something that is getting ubiquitous and cheap. So what's getting ubiquitous and cheap? Data. And what is complementary to data? Analysis.
- Prof. Hal Varian, UC Berkeley, Chief Economist at Google.
Building the world's largest Data Warehouses, Greenplum is committed to pioneering massively parallel data-intensive analytic processing. We are looking for talented individuals to join our new analytics team, which is developing a fundamentally new approach to how business generates meaning from data. This team will develop new methodologies and tools to enable advanced modeling and statistical analysis against petabyte-scale data sets.
Our Data Scientists will work with prospects and customers to prove the analytical capabilities of Greenplum's technology in generating business insights from big data. They will seek to understand our customers' most urgent questions, and use statistical methods and models to provide answers, often as part of pilot projects in the initial stages of a sales cycle or implementation. The Data Scientists will develop new practices and methodologies for working with the Greenplum data warehouse technology, often working closely with leading academics and industry experts. They will also work with engineers to create new tools and features that support sophisticated analytics within the database.
Responsibilities:
- Use techniques from business intelligence, statistical analysis and modeling to deliver business insights to prospects and customers based on data stored in Greenplum data warehouses.
- Work with internal and external teams to understand customer requirements.
- Develop proposals, based on available data and technology, to respond to these requirements.
- Create analyses and develop models.
- Deliver results and presentations in a timely manner.
- Create re-usable implementations of statistical tests and models using the available technologies in the Greenplum database.
- Work with the academic and business community to develop new techniques and to contribute to research in the area of business intelligence and analytics on large databases.
- Generate new product requirements for the Greenplum engineering group to enhance the analytics capabilities of the database.
Requirements:
- A passion for generating insights from data
- Strong knowledge of statistical methods generally, and particularly in the areas of modeling and business analytics
- Experience with statistical languages and packages, including R, S-Plus, SAS and Matlab; experience with databases and SQL; familiarity with business intelligence (BI) software
- Experience of working with large data sets
- Advanced degree in a technical field (e.g. mathematics, statistics, physics)
- A team player, capable of conducting independent research
- Results-driven, self-motivated, self-starter
- Not afraid to take on hard technical challenges
- Excellent communication skills
Greenplum is setting the pace in the database/datawarehousing space. We are growing rapidly and providing solutions to major companies in the industry. We offer individuals a generous compensation/benefits package as well as equity in our company.
